RunCloud RoundUp – 13th August

RunCloud RoundUp – 13th August

Welcome to our first ever RunCloud RoundUp… seem familiar? Yup, that’s right, its the RunDown in all but title, and now with added helpings of not being confused with a loss of service. We have also moved to a bi-weekly release schedule going forward, so with all that being said, let’s get on with it.

In RunCloud news, we are in the middle of our RunCloud Referrals Competition. It’s free to enter and you could win a free 2-year Business Plan subscription worth $1800. With that in mind we have two articles from the blog, firstly an introduction to rules and prizes of the competition from Liew, and an older post from Dino to let you know about the ongoing referral program.

It is August now, quite a quiet month in general as many countries are enjoying their summer holidays, but we still have a nice trove of articles for you. Firstly, Elliot Condon, the hero developer behind the Advanced Custom Fields plugin for WordPress has announced Gutenberg compatibility. But the big news is an ACF function that allows you to create Gutenblocks using ACF without touching any Javascript… Game Changer! Everyone loves the performance, we try to build our web applications to be as speedy as possible, and Frederick Vanbrabant decided to do some testing, just what performance tricks really work.

In Laravel News, Till Krüss introduces his Laravel Document Search Workflow for Alfred on macOS, this is a must have for any apple based developers. Techbeacon looks at how to survive the developer nightmare that is inheriting an old messy codebase to update. Speaking of horrible code, Rollbar has a roundup of the Top 10 PHP errors from across 1000+ projects, and also how to avoid them. Brian Jackson has an article, on how to create outstanding long-form articles in WordPress, over at the Kinsta Blog. Paul Redmond introduces Maizzle, a new email framework, at Laravel News. Media Currents brings us the Marketers Guide to Drupal 8, and why Open Source is the right fit for organisations. And lastly, Ali Spittel has her 25 tips for new developers, while Andy Carter brings us his essential Visual Studio Code extensions for PHP Developers.

In our tutorials section, we lead with an excellent piece on using Pusher to build a Chat app with Channels, PHP and Vue.js. Then Ben Sampson looks at how to speed up Laravel Relationship Queries on his blog. And then Pascal Landau continues his series on setting up a local dev environment with Docker, this week it is all about setting up Xdebug with PHPStorm on Docker.

After that, we learn how to create custom CLI commands with Symfony at Envato Tuts, then see how to mock external APIs with Laravel and VCR with an article from Tandem. Eastern Standard brings us a piece on Progressive Decoupling With Drupal 8 and ReactJS. Then Crell risks everything at Steemit and tells us we should never type hint on Arrays in PHP before Barry Van Veen demonstrates how to enforce strict type checking in PHP with PHP Code Sniffer, and finally, we see that even the Driest SOLID code can be spaghetti!
