Here are few ways to disallow index on your staging site:

  1. Add “noindex” tag to your staging site. Goto Settings > Reading and check the box for Discourage search engines from indexing this site
  2. Create a robots.txt text file in the WordPress installation root of your staging site. And add these two lines:
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

  1. I can’t get duplicator to work on my RunCloud WordPress install. openbase_dir seems to be an issue. Can you get with them to figure this out?

Hey Liew! Thanks for this lovely article.

I have one confusion in my mind.

You talked about the ways to disallow index on the staging site on the Bonus Tips section.
So, my question is, do I need to complete all the steps or ways (i.e. 1 , 2 and 3) or any one of the ways will do the job ?

Thanks, hope for a quick reply 🙂

    1. Bonus tips 1 should be enough to disallow index, it adds noindex, nofollow meta tags to your website. But your staging website will be available for anyone who know the staging website URL.

Or, if you want to make your staging website is not available for public, you can also do bonus tips 3 only. Then you will need to enter password to view your “password protected” staging website.
